The cycle of years is derived from the age-old sexagenarian cycle of 60 days which has later been applied to years instead of days. This basic cycle has been constructed from two cycles: the 10 heavenly stems and the 12 earthly branches. The heavenly stems which consist of five elements were enlarged by binary Yin and Yang cycle into a cycle of 10. The combination creates a 60-year cycle.
They are represented by animal symbols, namely in order:
Rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, chicken, dog, pig
In the Chinese astrology, the characters of individuals are associated with the animal representing the zodiac. Each year in the 60-year cycle represents an animal symbol with one of the five elements.

Chinese New Year falls somewhere between the end of January and the mid-February. The year 2558 which is Year of the Pig (12th order in the zodiac signs) begins on 18 February 2007 and ends on 6 February 2008. According to the element cycle, this year has fire element.

It is said that the Pig people have honest, thorough, gallant and patient characters. They are noble, quiet, studious, and shy so they tend to work behind the curtain. But they extend old-fashioned chivalries towards people they meet. Their relationships are very deep, devoted, and rich beyond measure. When others loose hope, pig people come to support. The pig people are reliable and never be disappointing on purpose.
The year 2007 has negative fire element and the Pig itself brings water element. It is said that both elements are not harmonious and dominates each other: water can turn of fire and fire can boil water.
