1999 Pets

Animals have been a part of the Indonesians’ traditional live since early times. People keep animals both for pleasure and companionship as pets and for breeding. Traditional settlements with large yard often maintain harmony with their environment including animals. Even today, many houses, mostly in the rural areas, are still enlivened with the actions of pets living around them.

The stamp series issued to mark the 1999 National Love Flora and Fauna Day pictures a house yard serving as an ecosystem for pets. They are: carrier pigeon, often trained to carry messages; dogs, man’s best friend, carnivorous mammals generally used as house guards; cats, popular household pets, useful for killing mice and rats; chicken, the common domestic fowls, usually bred for their flesh and eggs; rabbits, the furry mammals, children’s playmates; swans, the long, arched neck water birds which decorate the pools.
